An Emotive Journey

The parameters I set myself are always the same. The solitude I seek a necessary need in order to fully embrace the creative process. I allow myself this private time, away from everyone I hold dear in order to evolve. My senses alter, heightened by the lack of distraction as I feel every cell in my body calm. I still my mind, enabling the emotional balance to gently take hold. At last I am focused.

The subliminal and dormant expressions that are all too often elusive. An emotive journey that unfolds, moment by moment, culminating in indescribable, harmonious bliss.

This is the place I am most free. Neither tethered by thought nor action but simply being. My breath slows, the inhalation barely registering, the exhalation comfortingly rhythmic. The sensation that manifests is so difficult to describe and always fleeting, but leaves me with an undoubting knowledge that I am connected to every single thing. There is no difference between you and I, for you are me and I am you. There are only pure emotions that are beautiful by which I am engulfed.

I cannot determine for how long I am in this moment, but as always occurs I begin to slip away from it, only able to glimpse and feel it momentarily. My senses reawaken as the pull of time returns and as I do, I inhale a scent. So fragrant. So familiar.

The Season of Change

Day after day the seasons provide a sensory experience and I note the almost imperceptible changes as gradually winter transforms to spring. The heightened warmth of the sun encourages the flowers to begin their bloom, as life is teased from its cold sanctuary.

These are the times I cherish, as the sun pricks my skin and the hazy vista stretches out ahead of me, I can drift and daydream. I run my hands through the foliage that adorns the path and pluck a perfectly formed flower so delicate in detail. The dark green leaves and white petals juxtapose creating an elegant offering. Its scent sweet and vibrant, aromatic and fresh that induces an olfactory memory of you that borders on sensual hedonism. You’ve always worn the same fragrance that I recognise no matter how long we are apart. Even its name, Naked Neroli, like you, is suggestively alluring and enticing.

The sun begins its descent on the horizon and the shadows on the ground tell me it’s time to turn back, I wonder how my life would have evolved if I’d lacked the courage to become a true creator. If I had simply let it push and pull me wherever it wanted to. I inhale the cool air and exhale quiet contentment and turning the last corner, see you standing at the door, smiling.

An Eye For Detail

For years I had watched you covet this gem of an automobile and it hadn’t escaped my attention this particular model was manufactured in the year you were born; as you had so often told me, timing is everything.

And of all the cars ever designed I could see why this was still deemed the most beautiful. You opened the door, inviting me to step in. The bespoke leather interior you had chosen had smelt brand new and though luxuriously soft to the touch, it hadn’t yet had the chance to yield to my shape. Before starting the engine I watched as you took your time appreciating the craftsmanship; the delicate stitching and emblem on the steering wheel, the understated styling of the dials, the reassuring strength and ergonomic design of the handbrake.

I hadn’t understood why you wanted that first drive to be at dawn, taking the route I was so familiar with, left down Bowmont, along Montague and up toward the crest of the botanical gardens. As we reached the summit the convertible had purred, fully capable in its ability and the city skyline had opened up in front of us. Even at that time in the morning the sun rise had begun to warm the city, the ochre yellow and burnt orange hues had dazzled
the horizon.

I remember inhaling slowly and deeply, noting your signature scent that somehow reflected this sleek machine; your maturity deepened by experience, your natural and easy confidence. From memory I could pick out smoky traces of cedarwood and musk, something warm like lavender, a citrus freshness, perhaps lime.

It’s All About You

This is how you saw me, though I never knew it at the time. It was only years later you would explain it was your desire to fully understand me that had changed the trajectory of your entire life. Your confession was surprising and intriguing and I had pressed you to explain further. You were quiet for a time, contemplative and when you spoke again, thoughtful with your words.

Your eyes shone with a passion for your life’s work as you continued, “I’ve dedicated myself to discovering the ultimate perfumed elixir. Imagine having the sensory world at your fingertips, the limitless combinations and each one creates a totally unique effect. It’s a never- ending quest because just one more drop of fresh and lively bergamot or two more drops of heady and sensual rose alters the aroma entirely. And there are so many wondrous botanical scents to play with – sweet patchouli, exotic amber, mellow sandalwood and fragrant incense that culminate in a gorgeous floral accord, or spicy black pepper, warm lavender, flowery jasmine and sensual musk that create a deliciously smoky scent….” You trailed off, your internal thoughts drifting to a place I couldn’t follow, but when you turned your gaze back to me I could once again see the clarity in your eyes.

Your statement hung in the air between us, the explanation uplifting me, giving me a new perspective. A parting gift so liberating because finally, I understood; to possess a dichotomous nature is not a hindrance but in fact a thing of beauty.
